Thoughts on Family Planning

Dear God,

I’ve never been wise enough to know what is best for me.

YOU CHOOSE.

A dear friend, whom I have never had the pleasure of meeting, but greatly look forward to spending eternity with her, sent the following quote to me. She took it from the Above Rubies magazine. It was a tremendous encouragement to me.

“I sought God for comfort. I then had an even greater revelation of the preciousness of life. God spoke unto my heart and showed my husband and myself how blessed we had been to have had the opportunity to allow this child to have eternal life. Out of all the people in the world who were of childbearing age, God had chosen my husband and me to conceive and add another soldier into the Heavenly army. We counted ourseves honored to have had this opportunity bestowed upon us. Even if I were to miscarry every future pregnancy, we knew it would be a blessing. We were determined to not let Satan have a victory by not conceiving again. We were not going to allow God to be robbed of the lives He wanted to create to share eternity with Him.”

About 4 years ago God led me to a special place of giving myself, completely, and wholly to Him. To allow Him complete control of how many and when we have children. Though it took my husband a little longer to be led of the Lord, his heart is now in the same place. God has blessed us with 11 little ones, that we know of. Each one is a blessing and a treasure, though our arms only hold two of them each day. Many people do not understand the choice that Karl and I have made. Many have criticized and said many hurtful things. I do not hold any bitterness towards them and I pray one day they will understand why this is so important to us.

There are many verses of Scripture God has used to convict my heart of allowing Him complete control. Here are just a few . . .

When Eve had Cain she said, “I have gotten a man from the LORD.” Genesis 4:1b She knew it wasn’t anything she did to have Cain. Cain was given as a gift of God to Adam and Eve.

In the Noahic Covenant, the first thing God says is, “Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth.” Genesis 9:1 Many Christians today believe that the Noahic Covenant still applies to us today, yet this first part they want to disregard.

In Genesis 21, God gave a child to Abraham and Sarah. Abraham and Sarah had gone their own way and done what they thought was best and Sarah gave Hagar, her maid to Abraham. The decision Abraham and Sarah made, in taking matters into their own hands, is still affecting the children of God today. In Genesis 21:1-2 says, “And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said and the LORD did unto Sarah as He had spoken. For Sarah conceived and bare Abraham a son in his old age, and at the set time of which God had spoken to him.” God had a special play. He was to be in control – – – Him ALONE!

Rebekah was not able to have children and Isaac prayed for her. Genesis 25:21 “And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.” The Lord was the only one who was able to give children to Isaac and Rebekah.

In Genesis 30:1-2 it says, “And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die. And Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel: and he said, Am I in God’s stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the womb?” There was NOTHING Jacob could do to give Rachel children – it was only God!

Hannah longed for children. Since she could not have children her husband took another wife to have children with. In I Samuel 1:5b it says, “but the LORD had shut up her womb.” I Samuel 1:6b says, “because the LORD had shut up her womb.” Hannah could not have children and there was nothing she could do to have children, because it was God who is the one who decides when and how many children she would have.  I Samuel 1:17 says, “Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace:and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.”

“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep. Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” Psalm 127

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:1-2

Growing up I was always told to give my life to God as a sacrifice. But then when I got married my pastor told me to take control and to make my own choice of how many children I would have and when.

“Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid. What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” I Corinthians 6:15-20

If my body is the temple of God, then why do I feel I have the right, decided what will happen?? I am to glorify God in my body – which is His. How can I glorify God when I am not allowing Him to be in complete control?

These are just a few of the Scriptures/passages that God used to lead me to a place of giving Him complete control. This is not a popular view. Chrisitans are often the first to criticize and condemn other Christians. It is so sad. I pray that these verese will encourage your heart, that children are a gift and they are a blessing. Children are a gift from God and He will give or take away as He sees fit. The key is not that we have 100 kids, but that we allow God to do what He wants. What peace there is in just allowing God to do what He wants!
Seeking the one needful thing,

~ Sarah
